Blue Heron Vineyard specializes in American grapes and French Hybrids.
Fredonia- an American grape grown in this area because of its tolerance of the growing season. It has the fruitiness and rich red color that local winemakers love and the versatility for making wine, jelly, juice and even pies! These grapes ripen in early to mid-August and sell for .50 per pound to home winemakers at this time.
Marechal Foch- or simply as Foch, is a favorite wine grape. This small, purple-skinned French hybrid, with its deep purple-colored juice, produces sturdy, flavorful and age worthy reds. Its wines are acid-driven, making them naturally food-friendly. Tannin levels are minimal, which makes Foch easy to enjoy young, although the strong acidic backbone lends respectable aging potential. As a vine, Foch is winter-hardy and its fruit is early-ripening (mid to late August).
Our next vineyard addition will be the Chambercin grape:
Chambercin- also
a French Hybrid, is a red wine grape variety which has only been available
since the 1960s. These vines have higher disease and pest resistance, and
the wines produced are fruity in flavor. This
variety is especially resistant to fungal diseases so it is not surprising
that it is at home in humid regions. Chambourcin wines are deeply colored
and fruity. Some producers use the variety for blending, for dryer wines,
sparkling reds, and also for port style wines.
Our vineyards are located on State Road 66 at the Blue Heron Farm Cottage B&B, just one mile East of Rocky Point, Indiana.
